La journée sans voitures – Brussels

Today was the annual “journée sans voitures” in Brussels. Normally taking place on the third Sunday in September, this is the day that no cars are allowed in the city and you have to find an alternative form of transport to get around. Most of the locals make use of the “villo” – the bikes that are stationed all round the city that you rent from a machine on a pay-by-the-hour basis. The day is a great initiative – it was started to make people more aware of the global oil shortage, and to encourage citizens to get out and enjoy Brussels car-free. As well as trafficless roads, the streets are full of performers and stalls selling everything from food to Buddha statues to vintage candelabras…

I love this annual initiative! I wished something like this could be implemented more often across other countries in the world. 😀
